Basic Language Skills is a class for reading/dyslexia specialists and teachers of Tier III intervention who will be involved in intensive instruction for young readers with dyslexia or other related reading disorders. Teachers and specialists who have taken the prerequisite course, Basic Language Skills, are eligible to deepen their knowledge of phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, oral language, comprehension, and composition in the Advanced class. Becoming an expert in the structure of the English language enables our graduates to teach all students with a more diagnostic and prescriptive approach. Working toward expertise is intensive, but the rewards are great!

Meet Our Teaching Staff - Linda Corbett

Linda is a Certified Academic Language Therapist and has been with Neuhaus Education Center (NEC) for 15 years. She coordinated Neuhaus's Adult Literacy Program for 12 years and now works on the professional development staff . She first came to NEC as a parent, seeking guidance for a bright child who struggled with reading.

Linda continues her work in the evenings as an Academic Language Therapist, but can also be seen pounding the pavement daily with her spirited lab, Luke, and spending time with her family. Linda's wide interests include design and photography, traveling with her husband, and, like so many of us here at NEC, reading!

it's probably because you don't have the oral language background to understand it. These (pictured) and many other teachers who have taken Developing Metacognitive Skills here at Neuhaus know that a good, rich oral language will help their students go beyond decoding to deep comprehension.

Thesis of Distinction - Catherine Scott

St. Thomas University School of Education has named Catherine Scott's work, Increasing Literacy Coaching and Teacher Knowledge through Professional Development, The Thesis of Distinction.

She was honored on May 14th at St. Thomas University. Neuhaus wants to congratulate Catherine, a member of our teaching staff, on her huge success!

CALT. B.A. Psychology, Hendrix College, Conway, AR. Experienced classroom teacher in public school setting. Developed standards and practices for inaugural Dyslexic Intervention Program for public school, Dyslexic Intervention Coordinator in public school. Meet Our Teaching Staff - Jennifer Schmidt

If you have ever taken an online class at Neuhaus, you probably know the value of Jennifer’s expertise. Jennifer’s interest in technology sprang from a computer-aided drafting class that she took as part of her Environmental Design degree plan at the University of Houston’s School of Architecture. Her first position here, Distance Education Coordinator, has definitely expanded, and we now depend on her to help us enhance our teaching with the latest in technological resources.

Jennifer is no one-trick-pony, however. She has many other interests and hobbies, including knitting, crochet, origami, weaving, knotting, drawing Celtic knot-work, cross stitch, needlepoint, embroidery, jewelry-making, sewing…more hobbies than she can name!

Author of over 250 publications and a number of assessments, Dr. Nagieri has done research in the field of learning disabilities and giftedness since the 1970’s. He gave our teaching staff an overview of the PASS theory and how it relates to reading instruction. The basis of a specific reading disability, according to Dr. Naglieri, is weakness in a single area of psychological processing. One way of defining the processes that underlie academic abilities is PASS – planning, attention, successive processing, and simultaneous processing. An example of the relationship between a weak area of processing and the academic manifestation of that weakness might be a difficulty with sequencing information, resulting in problems with ordering sounds and blending them into words, or decoding.

Ginger joined the Neuhaus staff in 1988 and officially retired in 2007; however, she continues to assist in classes using Basic Language Skills. Now, family, friends, exercise, and reading weave together with teaching to give Ginger a full and interesting life. We miss Ginger as a full time teacher, but we're so glad we often still see her sunny face!

Following a live webinar with Susan Hall, this will be the second in our series of presentations on the why’s and how’s of RTI implementation in schools. Mary Ellis Dahlgren, Ed. Among her other pursuits before coming to Neuhaus were the coordination of a Title 1 reading program and working in a University of Texas Medical Branch dyslexia program. Meet Rai Thompson, Assistant Director or Professional Development. With such a literary background, you might think of Rai as the quiet, stay-at-home type. But think again. Mountain hiking and camping are high on her list of favorite things to do! Number one on that list is of course – reading.

Marcia K. Henry, Ph.D. Featured Speaker at Lennox M. Reed Seminar

Dr. Henry speaks frequently at conferences and writes for and serves on the editorial boards of several professional journals. She is author of the chapter, The History and Structure of Written English in Judith R. Birsh's Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills, which contains a detailed history of the languages and other factors that have shaped the development of our language since 54 B.C.E.

Dr. Henry will speak for the Lennox Reed Seminar on March 11, 2010, about morphemes, the meaning units within words such as prefixes, suffixes, base words and roots. Knowledge of morphemes is useful for acquiring fluent decoding and spelling of polysyllabic words and enhancing vocabulary. Frameworks for instruction, along with numerous instructional strategies and activities will be presented.
